The history of the group "House of Chettinad" is linked with the 9 decades old saga. In 1912 took birth the House of Chettinad through a visionary, idealist and born entrepreneur Dr.Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar who believed in Social Transformation through business. The founder of the House of Chettinad envisaged his companies providing the stimulus for Industrial Growth and conceived business as a means of improving the living standards of people.
Following the footsteps of his father Dr.Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar, Dr.Rajah Sir M.A.Muthiah Chettiar continued to contribute to the nation building cause and combined his business acumen to establish the company " Chettinad Cement Corporation Limited" in 1962 to cater to growing demands of cement in the country. One of the manufacturing unit located at Puliyur, Karur District, in Tamilnadu commenced production in April 1968 and another plant at Karikkali, Dindigul District Tamil Nadu commenced production in October 2001. Apart from cement, the Chettinad House is today engaged in activities as diverse as granite, engineering, silica, information technology, steel & textile trading, horse breeding, plantations, shipping, transportation, stevedoring, clearing and forwarding and logistics, Ready mix Concrete and Captive Power Plant.

*Pavithram is an unique cement manufactured at Puliyur Works having very high quality for special concrete applications.
From a modest beginning of 2 lac tonnes capacity per annum, it was gradually increased to 2.2 Million tonnes in the year 2001. Presently, both the plants employ the Modern Dry Process Technology. It has most Advanced, Sophisticated, Computer controlled state-of-the-art LOESCHE MILL for Grinding Raw Meal, LOESCHE lignite mill (First of its kind in India), a five stage pre-heater Kiln& Electronic packing plant. Equipped with centralised control room for process control, the advanced instrumentation with Expert System (Link Man)and elaborate display screen give up-to-the minute information on the production process so that, any deviation can be promptly corrected.
The Company, which has always been striving for Total Quality, possesses International Certificate ISO 9002 and ISO 14001 and takes pride in being acclaimed as one of the major player in a highly competitive Cement Industry in India. The Company added another feather to its cap by installing and commissioning a giant, sophisticated, high-tech and power efficient Onoda & Kobe (Japan Technology) cement mill resulting in a quantum leap in production to touch One Million Tonne mark. The company has consistently been working at more than 140% capacity (8 Lac tonnes) and many laurels have been achieved through award for "BEST PERFORMANCE" in the Cement Industry issued by Various Agencies. Besides, it has been customary to receive National Safety Awards year after year. |

Special feature of Karikkali Cement Factory
With growing demand for cement with in India and South East Asian countries, CHETTINAD CEMENT CORPORATION LIMITED installed a new green field plant in KARIKKALI having a capacity of 1.5 million tons per annum and commissioned in October - 2001. It has the most advanced equipment from L&T and FL SMIDTH- Denmark and LOESCHE, GERMANY. Energy efficient vertical roller mills are carrying out grinding operations, for RAW MILL and COAL MILL supplied by LOESCHE and Cement Mill by Onada and Kobe.
The Pyro-processing consists of five stage pre-heater with low-pressure drop cyclone and highly efficient Coolax cooler with excellent heat recuperation efficiency.
Latest state- of- art pollution control equipments have been installed for achieving the lowest emission comparable to inter national standards.
The only plant equipped with two modern cross belt analyzers (Gamma metrics), procured from THERMO ELECTRON CORPORATION, USA, one at mines that, continuously monitor and control the quality of limestone mined and the other cross belt analyzer installed before raw mill for online quality control of raw mix. The plant also has x -ray fluorescent analyzer for analyzing the clinker and cement quality and MALVERN 2000 analyzer for analyzing particle size distribution in cement to achieve optimum particle size.
The automation process is one of the most advanced control having sub control system linked with MODBUS & PROFIBUS communication. Field IO PANEL is located at site, which is unique for cement industry.
The Plant has variable frequency drive, with minimum of 3150 KW and transformers are protected by electronic relays. Power is being monitored through MODBUS communication and all the readings are made available in central control room.
With the consumer role changing from isolated to connected from unaware to inform from a passive to active consumer said to exercise their influence in every part of the business system. Chettinad Cement has met the challenge of the consumer by understanding the value of quality. Value creation process and the nature of relationship between the firm and consumer has helped to reach the present achievement. We have decided to expand our horizons by starting another 0.5 million tonnes grinding mill at Karikkali with an estimated cost of 60 crores.
