Chettinad
Logistics Pvt. Ltd., Lorry Division was
incorporated in December 1999 within the
Chettinad Group and commenced operations
in April 2000.
Its
focus is on providing vital Logistics and
Infrastructure support to Business and Industrial
Units as well as Power Utilities in South
India in key growth sectors of the economy,
covering the efficient movement of both
Raw Materials and Finished products. The
rapid growth in both Import and Export cargoes
to and from Southern India has provided
the base for this expansion in the Group.

Container
Terminal
As
an early step, in 2001, Chettinad Logistics
joined hands with the renowned P & O
ports of Australia to successfully bid for
a major BOT contract for a One Million TEUs
throughput container terminal at Chennai
Port . After winning the Contract, a Special
Purpose Vehicle called Chennai Container
Terminals Ltd. (CCTL) has been set up to
execute the contract and is operating efficiently
since November 2001.

Operations
In
2003, Chettinad Logistics also took over
all activities of Chettinad Ship Management
Services to further streamline operations
involved in ship management and operations;
for both Coastal and foreign flag vessels.
In
2004, the transport operations covering
over 300 trailers, trucks and tippers have
been consolidated under the Truck Division
Inland
Container Depot (ICD)
In
addition during 2004, Chettinad Logistics
has been licensed by Government of India
to set up and run a new Inland Container
Depot (ICD)/ Container Freight Station at
Coimbatore. This new facility has commenced
operations in September 2004 and will extend
the concept of Inter-modal transport to
the large tea export trade as well as other
engineering products/ textile exporters
of that region.
In
the fiscal year 2004-05 Chettinad Logistics
is expected to cross several important milestones
as listed below:
*
Trading volumes in Coal & Petcoke will
exceed O.35 Million MT.
* Port handling will exceed 0.8 Million
MT of Break Bulk cargos
* Containers handled at CCTL will exceed
0.7 Million TEUs
* Inland transportation will cross 2 Million
MT
* New ICD at Coimbatore will acquire at
least 50% share of Container cargo originating/terminating
in its hinterland.
